Choose Gas Engineer Software if
You are a gas or oil heating business, you want 2,300+ boiler manuals in the app, and you need Making Tax Digital support.
Choose OnPoint if
You also do electrical work, you want compliance checked before a certificate is issued, or you have a team — OnPoint's additional seats are £9 rather than a full per-user price.
The climb
Three steps up, or no steps at all
Scheduling, quoting and invoicing start at Core, not Starter — so the £19 plan isn't the one most firms actually run on. OnPoint has one step, and everything is standing on it.
Starter
£19/userCertificates and records. No scheduling, no quoting, no invoicing.
Core
£23/userWhere scheduling, quoting and invoicing arrive — the realistic comparison plan.
Pro
£30/userTheir top tier — and every user on the account pays the tier price.
OnPoint
£19 + £9One step. Certificates, scheduling, quoting, invoicing, AI, portal, payments — all of it, from the first seat.
difference over a year at five seats, against their Core plan
Their prices are ex VAT and per user. OnPoint isn't VAT registered, so £55 at five seats is the total that leaves your account.
Neither has a contract and both trial free for 14 days without a card, so this is a comparison you can run yourself.

Five things we can't do, or don't do as well
If your day involves oil work or manufacturer instructions, this list matters more than the price ladder above.
Where OnPoint is stronger · 10
A gas and oil job tool, or the whole business
That's a bigger claim than theirs, so here is exactly what it means, item by item.
Electrical certificates
They advertise gas and oil. OnPoint has 20 electrical types — EIC, EICR, minor works, emergency lighting, fire detection & alarm, the full PAT family, isolation and distribution board details — alongside 18 gas types and hot water, with a custom certificate builder for anything else. If you hold both tickets, or employ engineers who do, that is one system instead of two.
A validation engine, not just a form
67 rules covering Gas Safe procedure and BS 7671 that block an invalid certificate before it is issued — a GC number contradicting the manufacturer, an unsafe appliance with no Danger Do Not Use notice, an EICR marked unsatisfactory with no C1, C2 or FI, measured Zs exceeding the maximum. Every issue says what is wrong, why, and how to fix it. Not advertised on their site. See how it works.
Engineer reports written on site
Dictate the job and a clean structured report comes back, reformatted into professional past tense without inventing detail. Parts used are suggested from the report text, photos carry their EXIF metadata as proof of when and where, and the appointment, certificates and report are sent to the customer in one go by email or SMS. Not advertised on their site.
Live tracking, ETAs and self-service booking
Live engineer tracking on a map, route ETA, and the customer notified of the engineer's ETA by email or SMS. A public booking page customers book themselves into, with bookable services and durations, slot holds, a standby list, a gap filler for holes in the diary, and automatic reminders. Not advertised on their site.
Getting paid, properly
Stripe card payments, payment plans and instalments with saved cards and automatic reminders, late-payment interest on configurable terms, a payments ledger, an automated chasing queue, and a TrueLayer bank feed that matches payments for you. CIS deductions and the VAT domestic reverse charge are handled correctly, with two-way Xero and QuickBooks sync. They advertise accounts integrations; the payment plans, interest, bank matching, CIS and reverse charge are not advertised.
A customer portal, and subcontracting
Certificates, renewals and quotes on one secure link, with a question thread and certificate signing — links you can send, extend or revoke. Beyond that, a partner network for outsourcing: send and receive job offers, a subcontractor portal for progress and evidence, payout tracking, and a hashed, frozen dispute evidence pack both sides can download. Not advertised on their site.
Fully offline, not just offline calculators
They advertise offline calculators. OnPoint runs the whole job offline on a real sync queue — jobs, certificates, photos and signatures — and validation runs on the device, so a blocked certificate is caught on site rather than on upload.
AI on the certificate itself
Appliance details read from a photo of the data plate with per-field confidence and a refusal to guess serial numbers, flue readings read from the analyser, spoken reports turned into written ones, GC number and fault-code lookup, suggested parts and suggested project costs. Their AI is an assistant over the manual library — a different job, done well, but a different job.
Running the firm, not just the jobs
Project cost control with real job margins, timesheets with clock in/out, breaks, exceptions and approval, holiday management, a fleet register with DVLA lookup by registration, financial summary reporting, custom roles with granular permissions you can preview, pricing hidden from selected staff, and multi-organisation from one login. Not advertised on their site.
Team pricing
£19 for the first seat and £9 for every seat after, against a full per-user price. At one seat the two are close; the gap opens with each engineer you add — and nothing sits behind a higher tier.

How this page was written
Source: gasengineersoftware.co.uk · 31 Aug 2026Every claim about Gas Engineer Software comes from their own website as it stood on 31 August 2026. We have not tested their product, so where their site is silent we've written “not advertised” rather than claiming they can't do it.
Nothing here is a claim about their reliability or support, and their wins are marked as wins. If anything is out of date, email support@onpointbusiness.co.uk and we'll correct it.
Straight answers
Including the ones where the answer isn't us.
01Which is cheaper?
At one seat they're close — £19 against £19 on Starter, or £23 on Core where scheduling, quoting and invoicing live. From two seats OnPoint pulls away because additional seats are £9: £28 against £46 at two, £55 against £115 at five, £100 against £230 at ten. Their prices are ex VAT; OnPoint isn't VAT registered.
02Does OnPoint do oil?
No. OnPoint covers gas, electrical and hot water. Gas Engineer Software covers oil, so if oil work is part of your week they support it and we don't.
03What's actually on their Starter plan?
Certificates and records — their site puts scheduling, quoting and invoicing on Core at £23. That's why we compare against Core rather than Starter: it's the plan most firms end up needing. Every OnPoint feature is on every plan, so there's no equivalent step.
04Which does more for electrical work?
OnPoint. They advertise gas and oil; OnPoint has 20 electrical certificate types with BS 7671 validation rules behind them — Zs against the maximum permitted, CPC size against Table 54.7, RCD disconnection times, unclassified observations. If your firm holds both tickets, that's one system instead of two.
05Do I lose the boiler manuals if I switch?
Yes — OnPoint has no manual library, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. What OnPoint does instead is read the data plate and the analyser from a photo, look up GC numbers and fault codes, and suggest parts from your report. If the manual library is the thing you use most, that's a fair reason to stay.
06Can I move my data across?
Yes. Migration help is free — we'll bring your customers, sites and appliance history across, and there are no setup fees. Email support@onpointbusiness.co.uk or call +44 7884 697405.
